u know its kind of late to tell this now because u already closed the wiki.

P.S: u closed it while i was editing it so when i saved it said this page is blocked…
what should i do this is my information:

Kendrick Abreu Grullon 10-B

I think Africa is how it is because of their climate which were the deserts, savannas, and the rain forest. The desert takes up part of the area in Africa and was the less inhabitable for humans. this caused that most of the people in this region to focused only on surviving and not focus in their standard living or there economic stability. The savanna was the only climate where most of the African people could survive with their ancient ways very easy and it also sustains an abundant amount of agriculture which helped them survive. The rain forest was inhabitable but there use was not very helpful. the rain forest had poor soil for agriculture and it only was useful to get timber beside of that it was useless.

Forum category: Request Help / Request for Help
Forum thread: Assigments

(I want that all of you answer in just one single paragraph the following question:
Why do you Think Africa is the way it is Today?

To answer this question I want you to:

•Use the knowledge acquired during your research for the quarter project;
•Think objectively, don´t use simple or stupid answers like "because they are black, or because they are poor".
You´re answering a question that has been around for a couple of decades now, so answer it as a professional.)

Reading at what I wrote, and by the way thanks Gaby, I don´t see the part in which it says that you should include it in your quarter project. Read Carefully.

Forum category: Request Help / Request for Help
Forum thread: Assigments

I wish to know what the members of the groups are supposed to do if the group leader of the week gave some people certain subtopics, but not others.

To illustrate, I checked the wiki every day this week, and kept waiting for Eliecer to give our group subtopic assignments. On Thursday, he assigned a subtopic to Kendrick, Emily, Claudia, and himself. He reassured us that he would assign the rest of us a subtopic the following day.

Well, he did not. And it is Saturday, and the rest of our group did not receive the subtopic promised, as he gave to Emily, Kendrick, and himself. I've learned from previous group leaders that if they do not assign a subtopic, we should just post something ourselves. However, I was counting on the subtopic assignment and did nor receive it.

Just wondering what I should do about it.
Thanks :)

Forum category: Request Help / Request for Help
Forum thread: Group Leaders

Well, Gaby I don't really think anyone would be able to copy, since you know Octavio can see the history and see each of the changes
every person has made so it would be kind of silly to copy off some one else, considering he'll be able to see it. :)

And yes Mr, that's a little confusing since it says that we should 'Include it in our quarter projects' but we already handed them in,
so I don't know if doing it in my notebook as an assignment or as Gabriela said, just add it to the wiki.

Forum category: Request Help / Request for Help
Forum thread: Assigments

I was just about to ask the same thing about the pictures, Katherine.
The sequence of the pages, however, goes like this:

Presentation: This is where you put the title of the report, your name, your grade, the class, the teacher's name, the due date, and what it's for (in this case it's 1st quarter evaluation project), so on and so forth.

Introduction: You introduce the topics which are going to be further discussed throughout the report.

Body(you do not label this one): this is where the actual report goes. this is supposed to be five pages minimum, and here you will explain in detail the five topics Mr. Landolfi gave us to describe/explain.

Conclusion: This is where you wrap it up. You re-state in brief everything you explained in your body. Give an opinion, if desired. And try to make it all bind together as one idea, if you can.

Bibliography: this is where you provide the sources used as you were researching and reading. It would be best if you used the MLA formatting style to correctly cite the sources. You can google how to do it.

Hope it helps, Katherine :)

Forum category: Request Help / Request for Help
Forum thread: quarter project

I got the virtue andreia, which means fortitude, and I can't find absolutely anything. I even tried googling it in Greek, and a whole bunch of greek websites showed up, and I (obviously) didn't understand. So, I don't want to google it as "fortitude" because you said it didn't mean the same thing. I also have Herodotus, which appears right away because he is a person…

So, I was wondering if there are any suggesting on how I should google it so that it shows up.

:)

Forum category: Request Help / Request for Help
Forum thread: Greek terms mini project

It's also sad how younger generations are brought up learning how to distinguish people by their race or social status. And as they grow older, they begin to divide them even more [e.g. high school stereotypes]. This is why there is so much social repression in the world, and by 'this', I'm talking about the way people, throughout time, have become intolerant to certain facets of life and everything that has to do with certain cultures, just because given facets aren't the same as theirs.

As Mr. Octavio said, education is a key to opening our minds and letting us see things from outside the box. Unfortunately, depending on the upbringing of the person is how one obtains certain knowledge on different ideas and theories. Not just from how you learn things due to your setting (place which you are brought up), but due to every aspect of your circumstances. It has to do with your parents' upbringing as well, and the way they decided to let society mold their opinions on certain topics. It also has to do with your religion (and we all know that even though it is sad, this is one of the most cruel forms of differentiating people from one another, and it has been since the foundation of religion).

And I agree, everyone and anyone should have the opportunity to prove themselves, because honestly, that's all you need to do. Nobody should be intolerant of anyone else because everyone is created to have the same chances as anyone else. If society anywhere is just one big caste system, I guess we can still have hope that if we want it badly enough, we can change the circumstances for ourselves.

Forum category: Early River Valley Civilizations / Early River Valley Civilizations
Forum thread: Caste System: A one society controversy?

Well, the caste system was nothing more than an institutionalization of a natural order. In the ancient times people were divided by either by the function they had in society, or by the Conqueror/conquered differences. In time, as a political tool, came to exist the idea that there were racial differences, that one race was better than the other just because one survived and another got conquered.

I have stated countless times that there is not one single racial or genetically difference to support this argument, all humans are the same. But at the same time we are not. Some people are stronger, others are faster, others are smarter, others are healthier and so on and so forth. Darwinism (the idea that the fittest (not the better) survive) is an undeniable truth in humanity. The problem comes when we have groups like the Nazis, Jews (yes the Jews), believe that THEY are the chose ones, the best ones, and then everything goes to hell from there on.

When we look at somebody that is in a worst economical situation than us or that comes from a "lower" social class, we immediately tend to look at them with disdain. Sadly social stereotypes are in most (not in all) cases truth. And they are like that because you are what you learn, and you learn from the place in which you are brought up. If you are raised in a higher social class you are going to behave in certain matter, but when you are raised in the slums your behavior is going to reflect that of the collectivity.

Education is a key to open our minds and to let us see things from outside the box. Everybody deserves the opportunity to demonstrate that they are more than we might think they are, that they are better human beings, that they are smarter, that they are more educated, that they are in essence more.

Forum category: Early River Valley Civilizations / Early River Valley Civilizations
Forum thread: Caste System: A one society controversy?

I was thinking about the Aryan Caste system, and it suddenly popped out the image we have on our book about the caste; the head was for the Brahmins(priests),the hands for the Kshatriya(warriors), Vaisya(peasants and workers) with the feet and at the bottom(legs) the Sudras.
This caught my attention by the fact that if we do inferences with the image and the meaning its really interesting how they worshiped every class,it is exactly the same as we do.
For instance, the ones with the knowledge(head) are priests, teachers, even governers and so on.
Then, I googled this and it appeared to me several entries about how nowadays this caste is racist and how even throughout history its inflicted with the Holocaust and Nazism fundaments.
This was even one of the topics on board of The United Nations Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance to be held in Durban, South Africa during August 28 and September 1, 2001"
Indian people complaining about their surrounding society…
Not to be redundant and saturant but this brought me a reminiscence about howI treat, you, they, we, us through poor people,Haitian people,Teachers, the girl from the cashier, the driver, etcetera and etcetera because we consider they're lower than us, they're not like us and vice versa, how people with scarcity of resources are eager to climb to the highest of the status.
My point is, caste system is not an Indian controversy in their society, the caste system is what we do everyday, how we think and how we behave; not Dominican', this is a worldwide issue, this is the waste of a space in our minds in the most worthless and vain thoughts I've ever done and presence in my life.

-

Albert Einstein

heading level 5

Forum category: Early River Valley Civilizations / Early River Valley Civilizations
Forum thread: Caste System: A one society controversy?

To answer your last question, on the Wiki part The Peopling of the World that is exactly what you are going to do. As soon as I divide the groups you can start working on that. Now, the hominids are like the big family to whom be belong. What plants is to flower, Hominids is to human. Now all plant are flowers, and not all of the flowers look alike. The term Homo is what make us distinctly apart from the other hominids, because we were able to walk straight up in two legs.

Language can be a little confusing due to the fact that the word homo was assigned to the specie before we new we were connected to the rest of the hominids, hence the confusion with the term ape.

Hope to have clear your doubts.

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Other descendants

Right now I am watching the documentary, and it is so great. It caught my attention how different the australopithecus were from the homo erecutus in terms of looks. They said that when they discovered Lucy, she appeared to be less than 4 feet tall. But with the discovery of the homo erectus boy, they said that he was about nine years old, but already 5 feet 4 inches tall, which is extremely tall for any nine year old, even today. Why was that? Because the homo erectus were more carnivorous than any other species?

I also decided to google the Hominids and Homo difference [because I thought they were the same thing], but now I am confused. It said that Homo was a genus that included modern humans and all of their ancestors [which includes homo sapiens, homo erectus, homo habilis, etc.], and that Hominids are the Apes family.

Then it said that we [humans] are hominids but then, that means that Homo are also part of the hominids?

And I also wanted to know if we could do a 'wiki article' about that? :)

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Other descendants

Remember that the Human history is one that goes back as far as 4 millon years ago. Genetically all of human beings descend from just a small group of hominids. The, on the course of millions of years, that group developed, evolved, adapted, multiply, and in some cases got extinted. in this link Human Origin you can see a brief but complete description of the Human Journey.

When we talk about humans we need to make the diference between Hominids and Homo, because there is an imporatnt distinction. The reason why there is not much information about our ancestors is that for the las 60 thousand years we have very much being by ourselves in the world, our time of shared planet is from the 60 thounsand b.c. going as far as 4 million years back, is a long period of time and bones and structures get pulverized.

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Other descendants

The other day in class, we discussed about 3,000 people [2,000 females; 1,000 men] that left Africa in order to explore the other parts of the world, and how that is how people started expanding to other continents, such as Europe and Asia. I decided to include that in my section 1 essay, but then I started thinking about the rest of the people.

They say that we are all descendants of those 3,000 people who left Africa, but what happened to the rest of the people? There must have been some people left in Africa, because I think that those who left could not the only people living on Earth at the time.

So, I was wondering if any archeologists ever found out anything about the people who didn't leave Africa. Because that would not make us all related to the 3,000 people, but to some more.

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Other descendants

Religion is a touchy subject because it is in the realm of the irrational (i.e.. out of the realm of reason, that can not be grasped by te rational tools of humanity), te poetic, the mythological, and more important in the realm of emotions. So if the religion subject must be touched in this Wiki, try to keep it objective, and not to discriminate between differents beliefs. Belief is one thing, is the fueled of humankind and the soul of religions. Religions are different answers and different views of the same questions? What are we? Who created us? Where are we going?, and perhaps more importantly, Why are we here?

Religions are like culture, different, but none is better than the other, becacuse each religion is the way a different culture adapt those questions and their answers to their common life. All religions rest upon what we can roughly call "the same set of beliefs".

So try to keep it profesional, and good job girls.

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Evolution vs. Belief.

Heii… this is a really good theory, totally based on religious beliefs…
on my iGoogle, i get the quotes of the day and this may or may not have anything to do with this, but here it is:

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."
- Steven Weinberg

Maybe God did create this, or maybe it just started…
There are many, many different ideals of how the first homo sapiens came to life….

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Evolution vs. Belief.

Ok, guys, I was doing the section 1 assessement the other day, and I had my bible right next to me. Not to stress any belief-related theories, but I thought long and hard about it and came up with my own ideals about what happened so many years ago.

You see how we are said to derive from the hominid group? And how there were so many hominid species before us, until we actually became homo sapiens? If you look at it from a scientifical view, we could have just come out of nowhere and started to reproduce, thus evolving. But it's like Mr. Octavio said, like making ice cream. Maybe God, or whatever God you believe in, thought of the human species as His little experiment. In the book of Genesis, it states that God made man from dust. I'm guessing he had to observe his specimens until he realized that they weren't adequate enough to live in the world that He created for us, or just wasn't doing what He wanted us to. So he tried again, and again, until he saw how the homo sapiens, instead of adapting themselves to the Earth, they adapted Earth to their own needs.

So, even if, according to science, evolution is still happening, what if it isn't, and that's where we stopped because we were finally adequate enough to create civilzations and technology of our own?

Forum category: The Peopling of the World / The Peopling of the World
Forum thread: Evolution vs. Belief.
